Smith persists, 'They [the Clutters] never hurt me. Like people. Like people have all of my life. Maybe it is simply the Clutters were individuals had to pay correctly' (302). By once again stressing how horrible Perry was treated throughout his life, Capote is crafting an excuse for the killer. The Clutters were really not intended as murder victims and Perry was never intended to be a predator, family members was merely a sacrifice for Smith's anguish.
A lot of people will say, "Oh have a look at those poor ladies working hard in order to survive."
